In Nurburg, Germany, the 13 miles of unforgiving asphalt that is the Nurburgring hosts 73 corners, right- and left-handers, off-camber and sharp turns, steep hills, blind crests and fast downhill runs. This is where BMW tests its M-Series cars, boys and girls. The M-Series, otherwise known as M-Technik, or just "M," for Motorsport, was created to facilitate the German automaker's racing program. Bavarian Motor Works (BMW) then decided to take all this R&D and supplement its vehicle portfolio with a special series that would significantly upgrade its cars with modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics and exterior modifications. So it goes without saying the BMW M5 is equipped with serious power, refined driving capabilities and super-sleek lines. Each M engine is hand-built in Munich, Germany, and the 2013 M5 houses a much greener block. This season BMW utilizes an updated version of the company's twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 used in other M products. This block serves up 560 screaming horses along with a super-staggering 501 lb.-ft. of torque (that's a 118 jump from last season) and pairs with the manufacturer's seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission (DCT). Feel free to try and tame all this power at the track. Or simply park it at the country club and sign autographs. We don't care. We. Just. Want. One. Be sure to make note of the active M differential, which supplies optimum control of the M5's rear-wheel drive, and the M Compound four-wheel ventilated anti-lock disc brakes with dynamic brake control. Couple this with the car's M chassis and suspension system, and you've got yourself one helluva car.

Of course, the M5 includes safety features that are quite stellar as well. Check out the M5's dynamic stability control (which includes brake fade compensation), start-off assistant, brake drying and brake stand-by features. Other equipment shows up as coded driveaway protection and BMW's Safety Assist Plan. This setup includes four years of automatic collision notification, emergency request, enhanced roadside assistance, stolen vehicle recovery--and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

The engineers over at BMW tell us every M prototype is built by hand. The team selects Bavarian hides for the three-spoke, leather steering wheel and then hand stitch it with the M-Series signature logo colors of blue, violet and red. For spectacular comfort while at the track, BMW outfits this lovely beast with 18-way power front M multi-contour seats with four-way lumbar support, articulated upper backrest, adjustable thigh support and passenger seat memory. Sending superior sound out the two-way power moonroof with remote, one-touch operation is a 12-speaker, anti-theft AM/FM stereo with six-CD changer and MP3 system plus all the other bells and whistles. Now, you probably think this hunk of perfection couldn't get any better, but we'll leave you with one last tasty tidbit: Overall fuel economy for the 2013 M5 is 30 percent better than last year. Done and done.
